My commentary on this topic: Are you serious? Every girl I know has read Maya Angelou’s, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, and there is nothing scarring about this book. If anything, we should be encouraging, young girls especially, to read quality literature, that may in fact, include issues that they are dealing with in their own real lives as young adults. There are so many other young adult books out here today that speaks to their issues. I remember when people thought that Judy Blume’s, Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret was a big controversy. Uhh, would we rather have them reading some of this junky, very poorly edited Urban Lit, that passes for quality reading these days? Would they rather their kids are sitting around sedintary in both mind and body, playing video games and watching all of the oh so innapropriate reality shows on TV? Come on parents of Huntington Beach, CA, please get over yourselves and let these kids just read!
